SGMA Promotes Fitness and Exercise ‘ON THE AIR’

KISSIMMEE, FLORIDA – January 11, 2008 – WJBK in Detroit, KGUN in Tucson, WPTV in West Palm Beach, WDAF in Kansas City, and KMSP in Minneapolis. Those are just a few of the 20+ TV stations in the United States which broadcast the interviews during SGMA’s Satellite Media Tour (SMT) – held on Thursday, January 10. The SMT was based at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex (in Kissimmee, Florida) located on the premises of Walt Disney World. The exact location of the SMT at the Wide World of Sports Complex was Champion Stadium, the spring training home of the Atlanta Braves.

These interviews were shown during the morning and midday TV newscasts on the affiliates of NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, and independent stations. Two of the interviews, though, were sent to Internet media outlets. The principal focus of this SMT was to showcase a variety of new products in the exercise and fitness equipment industry to viewers at home.

SGMA’s Director of Media Relations, Mike May, was the host of this SMT. In his role, he explained the various attributes of each product. May, a veteran of more than 400 “live” TV spots and seven SMTs, was joined on each interview by either Mickey Mouse or Goofy plus a certified athletic trainer – Stephanie Lennon -- from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association.

In this SMT, the following products were featured:

1.) 1350 Running Shoes (from New Balance Athletic Shoe) – this ultra-modern running shoe features Abzorb EX cushioning technology for maximum ‘play hard/land soft’ technology;

2.) Power Lacer Ankle Brace, Quick Wrap Pro, Sports Rub, and Skin Lube (from Cramer Products) – these new sports medicine accessories are easy to use and should help your athlete return to the field of play as soon as possible;

3.) Snow Shoes (from Tubbs Snow Shoes) – this is a fun winter sports fitness alternative, vastly different than downhill skiing, cross-county skiing, and/or snowboarding;

4.) AE120XLM Pedometer (from Accusplit) – state of the art pedometer which tracks thousands of steps a day, it’s lightweight, and has an easy-to-read display;

5.) Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Fight Gloves, Training Gloves, Training Bag, and Grappling Dummy (from Century Sporting Goods Company) – learn how to train like the UFC professionals; and

6.) C2500 Treadmill with Competition Console (from Nordic Track) – with this treadmill, you can choose your type of race, choose the level of difficulty, and pick one or more simulated opponents…and then challenge them in a race as you track your progress on the Competition Console.

Since January of 2003, SGMA has produced seven TV/Radio Satellite Media Tours. Five of them have been conducted from trade shows (The Super Show® in 2003, 2004, 2005, & 2006 and the SGMA Spring Market in 2007), one was held at the ESPN Zone in Atlanta, Georgia in November of 2004 (the day after Thanksgiving, the biggest shopping day of the year), and the other one was held at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex last January.

During each SMT, only six to seven brands are featured. With such concentrated exposure, those products get thorough coverage. On average, each interview is three to five minutes long, which is ample time to cover the important aspects of each product, i.e. manufacturer, product name, attributes, price, and its retail availability. With access to a satellite truck, every interview is a ‘one-on-one feed’ with each individual station.

The key to the success of SGMA’s SMTs is that each one features product demonstrations and/or a celebrity athlete. Television stations want interactive interviews that will educate, enlighten, and entertain viewers. Some of the celebrity athletes involved in past SMTs has included boxer Mark Breland, former World Series MVP Luis Gonzalez, ex-world skateboarding champion Andy MacDonald, NFL All-Pro Simeon Rice, major league centerfielder Steve Finley, and Canadian Olympic trampoline medalist (2000 and 2004) Karen Cockburn.

“We are fortunate to have the personnel and the expertise to be able to conduct this kind of public relations initiative which portrays SGMA and the corporate products on display in a very positive way,” said SGMA President Tom Cove. “As an industry trade association, SGMA is well-positioned to speak on the behalf of the industry’s new product introductions.”

SGMA has plans for at least one additional SMT this year. It will be held on Tuesday, June 10 in conjunction with the SGMA Team Sports Show and SGMA Licensing Show which will be held at the Sands Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada. Again, each SMT is limited to only seven brands. Space is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
