SGMA's Single-Sport Participation Studies Identify Key Demographics

SILVER SPRING, MD – June 15, 2011 – Did you know:  According to SGMA Research, nearly 45% of all runners/joggers in the U.S. also work out on a treadmill………just over 75% of all ‘core’ (50+ times a year) yoga participants are female........more than 75% of all rugby players in the US are in college, have a college degree, or have performed post-graduate courses!  That information (and more) came from one of many Single-Sport Participation Studies by the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA).  If you need an accurate profile of today’s sports and fitness participants, then you should purchase one of more than 110 SGMA’s Single-Sport Participation Studies.  They are available online at www.SGMA.com

Each report contains statistical participation charts for that particular activity, key information on participation trends in recent years, participation profiles by gender, and a list of ‘Fast Facts.’  In addition, these reports will reveal demographic data on the geographic location of today’s athlete for that particular activity, their average age, participation venue, and household income.  This is the eighth straight year that this research has been made available by SGMA.

SGMA’s Single-Sport Participation Studies contain information not found in SGMA’s Sports, Fitness, & Recreation Activities Topline Participation Report.  For instance, each report features a map of the U.S. which showcases participation data based on geographic regions.

“By getting access to the information in these reports, it truly enables you to get a firm grasp of where the ‘hotbeds’ of activity are for any given sport,” said SGMA President Tom Cove.

The sports and activities range from fitness pursuits like treadmills, elliptical machines, and step aerobics to water sports such as snorkeling, scuba diving, and fitness swimming to team sports like baseball, lacrosse, and soccer to individual sports like running, bowling, and inline skating.

The data is generated from more than 40,000 nationwide participants using online surveys and reflects the total U.S. population ages six and above.  These reports are user friendly and provide key information attainable only through SGMA.

For SGMA members, the reports are $90 apiece.  For non-members, the reports will be $140 apiece.  They are available in the Adobe PDF format.  Any specific report can be downloaded at www.SGMA.com -- click on Research Reports and then click on any sport study in the list under the heading Single Sport Reports.
