The SGMA Congratulates Abby Wambach & The U.S. Women's World Cup Team For Their Historic Victory Over Brazil
A Game of True American Spirit Played For All the World To See
SILVER SPRING, MD – July 11, 2011 – The SGMA congratulates, Abby Wambach, a 2009 SGMA National Health Through Fitness Day Participant, and all her teammates on the U.S. Women’s World Cup team for their determination and tenacity to pull off an extraordinary defeat over Brazil yesterday in the 2011 World Cup.
After playing nearly an hour with only 10 players, with chants of “U.S.A” echoed throughout the sold-out stadium in the last few minutes of stoppage time, Abby Wambach scored a beautiful header off of a cross from midfielder, Megan Rapinoe. This goal ultimately sent the game into a shoot out, where U.S. Goalie Hope Solo was able to block the third shot taken by Brazil to send the U.S. into the Semi-Finals against France.
“Somebody’s writing a book, and it’s about the American attitude and finding a way to win—unbelievable,” stated Pia Sundhage, the U.S. Women’s Coach.
In a post game interview, Wambach said, “This is what being an American is all about. We never quit, never gave up and I knew all we needed was one shot.” “This epitomizes the true American spirit and one that we can all teach our children,” said SGMA President Tom Cove. “If this is what participating in sports does for you, then any parent that does not pay attention is really missing out for their child.”
This was the same sentiment that Wambach used throughout the SGMA’s 2009 National Health Through Fitness (NHTF) Day when she joined industry leaders and physical activity advocates on Capitol Hill to request Congressional support for 2 SGMA physical activity initiatives, the Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) Bill and the Personal Health Investment Today (PHIT) Act. Our 2012 NHTF Day will be held on March 7. To learn more visit www.getinvolved.sgma.com.
Through the U.S. Women’s sheer determination they have now found themselves up against France, when the entire country will be watching and rooting them on Wednesday, July 13.
