SGMA Plays Prominent Role in Congressional Baseball Game
SGMA Members Supplied Equipment for This Year’s Event
SILVER SPRING, MD – July 18, 2011 -- The Annual Roll Call Congressional Baseball Game on July 14th was a battle of the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots.’ The Democrats had a strong, experienced, overpowering pitcher and the Republicans did not. That was clearly evident from the beginning of the game as Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-LA) pitched a complete game, recorded 13 strikeouts, and allowed only one hit – a sixth-inning bloop single to right field by Rep. Steve Pearce (R-NM) – in the 8-2 victory. This was the third consecutive victory for the Democrats in the game which was played at Nationals Park, the home of the Washington Nationals, located in downtown Washington, D.C.
Richmond, 37, played college baseball in the 1990s at Morehouse College. At the plate, Richmond was equally effective as he went 4-for-4 and was named the MVP of the game.
Rep. John Shimkus (R-IL) was the losing pitcher in the game.
Despite the defeat, the Republicans still lead the overall series, 38-34-1, but the Democrats won the Roll Call Trophy which is given to the squad which wins the most recent best-of-five series. A new series will commence next year.
This annual game raises money for two local charities: the Washington Literacy Council and the Greater Washington Boys & Girls Clubs.
Equipment used by both teams – in the game and during practices leading up to the big event – was donated by SGMA members Diamond Sports, Easton-Bell, DeMarini, Reebok and the Wilson Sporting Goods Company. The baseball equipment will be donated to the Washington Boys & Girls Clubs and Washington, D.C. Public Schools to help increase youth participation in baseball in the D.C. area.
