SGMA Legal Summit Explores The Cutting Edge On Head & Body Protection On April 10, 2012 In Las Vegas, NV

Concussions, deaths due to Commotio Cordis (sudden heart stoppage), chronic brain injury, enhancement of injury rather than protection- a chorus of discordant voices creating much more heat than light. The SGMA’s Legal Task Force once again presents the 5th Annual LRMS.  As usual it with examine and provide guidance on cutting edge issues such as head and body protection. Concussion, skull fracture, traumatic brain damage, heart stoppage, enhanced injury and rules of the games will be discussed with a goal of presenting strategies for coping with these explosive injuries.

Stacey Vernallis, Bill Staar, and John Kuppens will address important events of the last year and the coming year regarding headgear used in football, hockey, lacrosse, and other sports. Specifically, they will discuss the impact of recent helmet-testing results, the rise of concussion-related lawsuits by present and former collegiate and professional athletes, growing government involvement in the sports-helmet industry, and new concerns regarding the alleged contribution of artificial turf to concussion.

Terry Smith Ph.D. of Dynamic Research, Inc and Len Clement of Phoenix Performance Products will discuss their experiences in designing body protection and creating enforceable standards to protect consumers. Jeff Fiorello, from Bureau Veritas, will add their compliance testing experience.

Moving forward without causing new issues and compromising the performance of participants is a critical task in body protection. Our panelists will use their experience in Football, Hockey, Lacrosse, Equestrian, Baseball and Bicycling to provider ideas and guidance to our audience.
