WHY:
John, who has attended National Health Through Fitness Day on two previous occasions, is being honored “in recognition of his lifelong commitment to promoting active, healthy lifestyles in America.”  
 
Previous Lifetime Achievement Award winners are 1982 Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker in 2009…..1987 Heisman Trophy winner Tim Brown in 2010……tennis legend Stan Smith in 2011….World Champion Runner Jenny Simpson in 2012… and former NFL players Ken Harvey (four-time NFL All-Pro Washington Redskins linebacker) & John Booty (Jets, Cardinals, Eagles, and Buccaneers) in 2013.
 
The Sports & Fitness Industry Association is organizing a day of advocacy on Wednesday, March 4 -- National Health Through Fitness Day -- where more than 100 people (many of whom are celebrities in sports, including Harvey and Booty, Herschel Walker, and Olympic medalists Rowdy Gaines, Cullen Jones, Shannon Miller, Esther Lofgren, April Ross and Tommie Smith, among others) will meet with members of Congress to ask for support for three legislative initiatives that will help all Americans adopt more physically active and healthy lifestyles.
 
  • Personal Health Investment Today (PHIT) Act would change current federal tax law to allow for the deduction or use of pre-tax dollars to cover expenses related to sports, fitness and other physical activities.  
  • Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) provides grants to school districts to support innovative physical education methods. 
  • Physical Activity Recommendations for Americans Act – Have the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) update the guidelines every 10 years to provide recommendations based on a preponderance of current scientific and medical knowledge, including guidelines, for identified population subgroups, as needed.
