Basketball: Alive & Well Around The World- SGMA Figures Showcase Strength of ‘Hoops’ in the U.S.

Date: 8/4/08

WASHINGTON, D.C. – August 4, 2008 – The game of basketball has global appeal and it’s firmly entrenched as the #1 team sport in the U.S. – according to the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA) . Right now, nearly 26 million Americans are in ‘hot’ pursuit of jump shots, free throws, and slam dunks – and millions more are fans of this sport. The game’s popularity will only continue to soar as the sport takes center stage at the Olympic Games in China.

According to SGMA research staff, basketball has a high percentage of interested participants as 70% of all ‘hoopsters’ play the game at least 13 days or more a year. It’s also worth noting that a significant percentage of all basketball players are young, come from upper-middle class households, and live in large metropolitan areas. For instance, 43% of all players are under the age of 18; 44% of all players come from homes where the household income is more than $75,000/year; and 43% of all players live in cities populated by at least 2,000,000 people.

As far as cross-over appeal is concerned, the top five ‘other’ athletic pursuits for basketball players are bowling, walking for fitness, running/jogging, billiards/pool, and bicycling.

As far as product purchases are concerned, sales of basketball-related items are strong. In 2007, wholesale sales of basketballs, backboards, and accessories were $353 million – the third largest category in team sports, behind only baseball/softball and football. In athletic footwear, basketball shoe sales were $1.015 billion, ranking it third behind running shoes and classic/originals.

“Basketball is a unique team sport that is appealing on many different levels,” said SGMA President Tom Cove. “Since 57% of all players are over the age of 18, that’s proof that players, especially men, are finding opportunities to play beyond their college years.”
