Former National League MVP Steve Garvey Honored with SFIA Lifetime Achievement Award
March 18, 2016 – Silver Spring, MD – The Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) presented Major League Baseball (MLB) Hall of Famer Steve Garvey with its Lifetime Achievement Award. Garvey was honored at 2016 SFIA National Health Through Fitness (NHTF) Day.
The 17th NHTF Day was Garvey’s third appearance at the industry’s biggest lobbying and advocacy event and he received special recognition for his lifelong commitment to promoting active, healthy lifestyles in America.
“For me to be here at NHTF Day is an honor to begin with, but to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award is a very special thing,” said Garvey. “Those of us who reached the ultimate level of playing the games that America watches started out by going to a sporting goods store and falling in love, by touching the sporting equipment and falling in love and that lead to careers for us,” he remarked.
NHTF Honorary Chairman Herschel Walker presented Garvey with the award at the March 16th Breakfast Ceremony, attended by more than 150 celebrity athletes, industry executives and medical professionals.
Garvey joins a list of award winners that includes the aforementioned Walker, former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Brown, former NFL players Ken Harvey & John Booty, tennis legend Stan Smith and ex-MLB pitcher Tommy John.
Following the award ceremony, Garvey headed to Capitol Hill to meet with members of Congress to ask for support for Personal Health Investment Today (PHIT) Act. The PHIT Act lowers physical activity costs by changing current federal tax law to allow for the deduction or use of pre-tax dollars to cover expenses related to sports, fitness and other physical activities.
“I’m here to initiate getting America back in shape, because I feel through a strong body comes and active mind and a warm soul,” added Garvey.
