SFIA to Promote Physical Activity to Congress on National Youth Sports Day
Silver Spring, MD, July 11, 2016 – The Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) will join the National Council of Youth Sports (NCYS) and the Congressional Youth Sports Caucus at the NCYS Physical Activity Expo to celebrate National Youth Sports Day. The July 12th Expo will be held in the Rayburn House Office Building to promote youth activity directly to Congress.
NCYS Youth Sports Day is part of a week-long awareness campaign focused on supporting P.L.A.Y.S. – Physical Activity, Living Healthy, Access, Youth Development, Safety. The Expo offers NCYS and Members of Congress the opportunity to get active and learn about youth sports activities.
“SFIA is a leader in Washington at promoting healthy, active lifestyles to reverse the sedentary trend in America.” said SFIA Vice President, Public Affairs, Bill Sells. “In collaboration with our partners in the youth sports, medical, fitness and health community we’ve collaborated to build awareness and support for policies to increase activity.” he added.
Research shows there are serious long-term health risks for inactive youth and evidence shows parents who were inactive as children are six times more likely to have inactive kids. SFIA is committed to changing the culture toward a more active America and has partnered with NCYS to promote initiatives to increase youth sports participation.
SFIA is leading the effort to pass the PHIT Act, legislation aimed at lowering the cost barriers associated with participation in youth sports and fully supports the objectives of P.L.A.Y.S. to get kids more active.
“We stand behind any legislative movement that promotes active, healthy lifestyles,” said SFIA President and CEO, Tom Cove. “The NCYS and the SFIA both aim to educate the public on inactivity in our youth, and with our combined legislative efforts we can make America more active and healthy today.”
