2017 Tracking the Fitness Movement Report
SFIA’s newest fitness report showcases the most popular activities for the year and confirms that higher-income households are growing more active than lower-income households
SILVER SPRING, MD (Oct. 31, 2017) –The Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) announces today the release of its annual “Tracking the Fitness Movement” report, which reviews the annual fitness participation in the U.S of those ages six and over.
Certain fitness activities did see a large spike in participation, including cross-training (10.3 percent), stair-climbing machine workouts (13.9 percent) and aquatic exercise (14.6 percent). Cross-training style workouts had the sharpest jump for CORE participation at 14.3 percent, while bodyweight accessory-assisted exercise had the highest increase for total participation (13.4 percent) and CORE participation (19.9 percent) for conditioning activities.
Additionally, SFIA’s data reports that health club memberships continue the positive trend of increasing members by 1 million every year since 2012.
“It’s clear that certain fitness activities are continuing to grow in popularity, and Americans are choosing what they want to participate in based on their preferences and needs,” said Tom Cove, SFIA President & CEO. “Our data shows this trend by proving that Americans are choosing a wide range of fitness activities, from cross-training to aquatic exercises.”
SFIA’s data shows increasing activity levels in households with family incomes above $75,000; but alarmingly, SFIA also reports growing levels of inactivity in households below $50,000. Additionally, although most Americans classify themselves as active, the Inactivity Pandemic continues to be a major concern, with 27.5 percent classifying themselves as inactive – these numbers closely mirror those in 2015 and 2014.
