Herschel Walker to Co-Chair President’s Council on Sport, Fitness, and Nutrition
SILVER SPRING, MD (May 7, 2018) – President Trump will nominate football star and physical activity advocate, Herschel Walker, to Co-Chair the President’s Council on Sport, Fitness, and Nutrition (PCSFN), along with retired New York Yankee standout, Mariano Rivera, and Olympic volleyball gold medalist, Misty May-Treanor. The Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) applauds the nomination of Mr. Walker, who has served as Honorary Chairman of SFIA’s annual National Health Through Fitness Day activities in Washington since its inception in 1999.
“We are extremely heartened to see Herschel Walker nominated to this prestigious position,” said Tom Cove, SFIA President and CEO. “Herschel has been a strong and inspiring leader in promoting physical activity and sports for all Americans for more than two decades. We look forward to working with Herschel, his Co-Chairs and the full council to promote active, healthy lifestyles.”
Walker, Rivera and May-Treanor will lead a council comprised of 20 inspiring leaders in the sports, fitness and nutrition worlds, all of whom provide unique backgrounds, creating a powerful force for the cause. The council will further the administration’s efforts to promote activity and encourage Americans to lead healthier lifestyles. As inactivity rates continue to remain alarmingly high, the PCSFN will be imperative to discovering new ways and initiatives to curb the sedentary lifestyle trend.
Herschel has worked with SFIA for many years to promote activity and health. He assisted in efforts to increase physical education funding for schools via PEP grants - an SFIA priority, which resulted in nearly $1 billion in physical education funding for local schools. He is currently working to help families with the cost of activity by promoting the Personal Health Investment Today (PHIT) Act, which allows the use of pre-tax funds for qualified activity expenses. His passion for sports, dedication to fitness and commitment to a healthy lifestyle make Herschel Walker a great choice to lead this council. This is a strong group of leaders in the sports, fitness and nutrition space who will bring new ideas to the forefront.
