Sports Apparel Monitor 2001

Sports Apparel Monitor 2001

Total spending for sports apparel declined 3.7% to $36.4 billion. This was the first down year for the category since NPD began measuring it in 1994. The difficulties also were echoed in apparel categories that are essentially subsets of the larger sports apparel category described above. Active sports apparel, which is apparel purchased specifically for use in an active sport, declined 5.1% to $7.9 billion. Sports licensed apparel, which refers to clothing with some sort of commercial sports motif, suffered a decline of 7.3% to $2.2 billion. Despite the foregoing, the sports apparel market remains vibrant and innovative. The category may be rowing against a strong fashion tide and a weak economy right now, but neither condition is likely to last forever. This report provides a historical overview of sales, usage and sport participation data, 1994-2000, highlighting sport apparel market trends, buying habits and sport-specific purchases. 2001 Edition (16 pages)
