2015 National Health Through Fitness Day Overview:

SFIA National Health Through Fitness Day (NHTF Day) is the culmination of a year round effort by the SFIA and its many sponsors and volunteers to pass major U.S. legislation to “Get America Moving”. For the past 16 years, the SFIA has brought people together in Washington, D.C. to accomplish our goals. Approximately 150 leaders from the sports, fitness, and PE industries meet in early March to lobby Congress to pass key legislation which will help our country overcome a major epidemic, obesity and sedentary lifestyles. Other attendees include company representatives from the food and beverage industry.

On March 4, 2015, six Olympic gold medalists, one Heisman Trophy winner, one Super Bowl champion, one Olympic silver medalist, more than 100 leaders from organizations in the sports and fitness industries, and  athletes from MLB, NHL, NBA, USA Swimming, Easton, Nike, Puma, ASICS, EvoShield, Polar, Franklin, Speedo and Under Armour joined together to meet with the U.S. Congress and requested support for federal legislation to help this country reverse the current ‘Inactivity Pandemic.’ Click here to view the list of 2015 celebrity athletes.

These physical activity advocates had two key messages to convey to the 162 Congressional offices that they met with: (1) there’s an overwhelming need for daily P.E. for all school children and (2) all Americans need to embrace healthy, active lifestyles.

The current legislation the SFIA is focused on for NHTF Day is the SFIA Increase Participation Plan (IPP), the Personal Health Investment Today (PHIT) Act, the Carol M. White Physical Education Act (PEP) and the Physical Activity Recommendations (PAR). These initiatives will help “Get America Moving” and help overcome the obesity crisis.
